A Touch of Color
Treated pumpkins and ornamental corn from County Line Plants & Produce
A Touch of Color
From political signs to Halloween decorations, from the leaves to the pumpkins; yards around Madison are getting much more colorful these days.
The market is no exception, with so many varieties and fall finds coming in, like these beautiful Ashmead's Kernal apples from Atoms to Apples, just one of the many heirloom varieties currently being offered.
Crates of carnival and delicata squash draw the eye from our produce growers. Elsewhere purple Napa cabbage joins the ranks of other colorful fresh greens.
Bright yellow Scotch bonnet peppers from Savory Accents (pictured) hide their intense heat behind their bold exterior.
Some offerings keep their beauty a secret, like the humble looking watermelon radish. It's only after you crack one open that you can see it's marvelous pink interior.
Perez Produce has no shortage of great offerings this time of year, but their lovely orange carrots (pictured) are not to be missed. They would be perfect for this warming fall carrot ginger soup.
The wonderful colors at market aren't just limited to produce, as Bryant Family Farms will offer their black meat chicken this weekend. These unique birds have black skin, meat and bones, but cook up just the same as other chicken. Grab some this Saturday or try their French guinea fowl.
As we move further into October, we're happy to announce Wetherby Cranberry Co. will be back starting this Saturday for the rest of the season with their Warrens-grown fresh & dried cranberries.
We'll also welcome back Inspired Alchemy this Saturday with their yummy gourmet cacao truffles. Stop by for something extra delicious and sure to please.
Keep an eye out for all the colorful options this weekend, being sure to enjoy all these wonders before the season wraps up in early November.
See you at market!

Food Scrap Collection at the Market!
Beginning July 20th, Sustain Dane is expanding its free Food Scraps Drop-Off program to the Westside Community Market. According to the Wisconsin DNR, our landfills consist of 14.5% food that would be traditionally edible, and 6% “food scraps” (like peels). Take action and bring your food scraps to Sustain
Dane’s Westside Market booth on Saturdays from July 20th to November 2nd*, from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
They can accept the following materials:
Raw Fruits
Raw Vegetables
Coffee Grounds
Loose Tea
Plain Pasta/Rice
Eggshells
Gourds
They cannot accept the following:
Meat
Dairy
Cooked Foods
Bread
Produce Stickers & Twist Ties
“Compostable” Bags
“Compostable” Utensils (Forks, Plates, Cups, etc.)
Paper Products
To date, this free public program has composted over 36,000 pounds. Compost buckets will be available at the first market to use for the remainder of the program.
Missed a market day? Bring your scraps to one of their other locations at the South Madison or Eastside Markets on Tuesdays.
All collected scraps are taken to Neighborhood Food Solutions (NFS) Farm which supports formerly incarcerated individuals in urban agriculture and teens in entrepreneurial and agricultural training. NFS
provides farming opportunities for community members who may not normally have access and resources to learn about and participate in farming. With this partnership, food scraps collected at the farmers markets will help to rebuild and create healthy soil at the farm to continue growing produce.
This program is in partnership with the City of Madison and Neighborhood Food Solutions. Learn more about the program here.
*The extension of the Westside Community Market food scraps recycling site is part of a youth led Sustain Dane initiative through the Youth Climate Action Fund focusing on youth engagement in food composting.”
