Enter August
Stepping into August this week, we have a lot to look forward to before Labor Day.
At market, we're enjoying the first apples of the season from Ten Eyck Orchard (pictured), alongside Door County Fruit Market peaches, and followed later in the month by fresh melons.
Blueberries are still coming in strong, while new fruit additions like fresh blackberries and aronia berries are popping in from vendors like Yang Family Produce.
Soil-grown tomatoes have been rolling in, with larger quantities to come, joining the first fresh peppers of the season from places like Emerald Meadows Family Farm (pictured).
The fresh flower lineup grows in August too, with sunflowers, dahlias, lisianthus and gladiolas bringing more color and variety to the market from vendors like Ka Vang Thao, Lor Farm and Hope & Hill Flower Co.
Being the last month before school kicks back in, August is the perfect time for market projects that get the younger ones working in the kitchen. Two fun recipes ideas to try this August are making refrigerator pickles or homemade pesto.
Let Urban Gourmet hook you up with supplies and grab some of their mini cucumbers (pictured), perfect for a pickle recipe.
Each market in August will see new offerings, so we hope you can catch all five this year. We'll not only look forward to all the delicious finds, but also the return of the Zucchini Car Races towards the end of the month.
Good food, fun for the whole family and many wonderful weeks ahead, let's give it up for August market season.
See you at market!

Food Scrap Collection at the Market!
Beginning July 20th, Sustain Dane is expanding its free Food Scraps Drop-Off program to the Westside Community Market. According to the Wisconsin DNR, our landfills consist of 14.5% food that would be traditionally edible, and 6% “food scraps” (like peels). Take action and bring your food scraps to Sustain
Dane’s Westside Market booth on Saturdays from July 20th to October 5th, from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
They can accept the following materials:
Raw Fruits
Raw Vegetables
Coffee Grounds
Loose Tea
Plain Pasta/Rice
Eggshells
Gourds
They cannot accept the following:
Meat
Dairy
Cooked Foods
Bread
Produce Stickers & Twist Ties
“Compostable” Bags
“Compostable” Utensils (Forks, Plates, Cups, etc.)
Paper Products
To date, this free public program has composted over 36,000 pounds. Compost buckets will be available at the first market to use for the remainder of the program.
Missed a market day? Bring your scraps to one of their other locations at the South Madison or Eastside Markets on Tuesdays.
All collected scraps are taken to Neighborhood Food Solutions (NFS) Farm which supports formerly incarcerated individuals in urban agriculture and teens in entrepreneurial and agricultural training. NFS
provides farming opportunities for community members who may not normally have access and resources to learn about and participate in farming. With this partnership, food scraps collected at the farmers markets will help to rebuild and create healthy soil at the farm to continue growing produce.
This program is in partnership with the City of Madison and Neighborhood Food Solutions. Learn more about the program here.
