Welcome to the Fall Session

Delicata Squash from County Line Plants & Produce

Welcome to the Fall Session

For many of us Madisonians, this morning's air was filled with the sound of children making their way to the first day of school. Like the first falling leaves or bushel baskets of winter squash, the signs of the coming fall are more present by the day.

At the WCM, it means we've rounded the corner into our final 10-week session of the 2021 season and while many don't look too fondly on the cooler weather to come, we at the market have much to celebrate.

The fall session marks the return of two vendors, Driftless Chocolates & B's Honey. Each emerging from their summer sabbaticals to sweeten each market visit.

As the days grow shorter, the bounty grows larger with apples, squash, mums, pumpkins and much more rolling in before too long. While we wait for telltale signs of autumn, we can still revel in the summer harvest with cobs of Alsum Sweet Corn, colorful heads of Romanesco broccoli & purple cauliflower from Emerald Meadows Family Farm and an ever-growing variety of apples to enjoy from Pleasant Springs Orchard (all pictured).

The next ten weeks will have much to offer for the market-goer, with plenty of opportunities to preserve the flavors of the season, be it canning up fresh tomato sauce, putting up your favorite pickles or drying fresh apples for the colder days to come.

While we'll have to be patient until October arrives, we're also eagerly anticipating the return of Wetherby Cranberry Company with their Warrens-grown fresh and dried Wisconsin cranberries.

Until that time comes however, we're excited to welcome back Garden Gate Flowers this weekend with their carefully tended selection of fall plants to enjoy.

So take in the next ten weeks of market with pleasure. Cool days are nothing to fear, especially with a mug of warm cider at hand.

See you at market!
